Fixing Mod Conflicts and Crashes
Mods are great until they aren't. If your server started crashing, players are getting errors, or vehicles are glitching out, you've probably got a mod conflict. Here's how to deal with it.
Signs of a Mod Problem
- Server crashes on startup
- Server crashes when a specific vehicle spawns
- Players crash when joining
- Vehicles look broken or have missing parts
- Console is spitting out errors
Step 1: Check the Console
Your Console tab is your best friend here. Look for error messages, especially:
- Lines with
ERRORorWARN - Crash stack traces
- Messages mentioning specific mod names or file paths
- Lua errors
The error message usually points right at the problem mod.
Step 2: The Toggle Test
If the console isn't obvious, isolate the problem:
- Open the Mod Manager tab
- Disable ALL mods (toggle them all off)
- Restart the server
- Confirm the server runs fine with no mods
If the server still crashes with no mods, the issue isn't a mod — check your server config or contact support.
- Enable mods one at a time, restarting after each
- When the problem comes back, you found your bad mod
It's tedious but it works every time.
Step 3: Dealing with the Problem Mod
Once you've identified the culprit:
- Remove it. Some mods just don't work in multiplayer.
- Check for updates. The mod might have a newer version that fixes the issue.
- Check compatibility. Some mods need specific BeamNG.drive versions.
- Look at the mod's comments/reviews. Other people probably hit the same problem.
Common Mod Issues
Outdated Mods
Mods built for older BeamNG.drive versions often break with updates. If a mod hasn't been updated in a while, it might not work.
Duplicate Vehicle Mods
Two mods that modify the same base vehicle will conflict. For example, two different "improved Gavril D-Series" mods can't coexist.
Oversized Mods
Some mods are huge (500MB+). They can cause:
- Long download times for players
- Memory issues on the server
- Timeout errors during connection
Map + Vehicle Conflicts
Rare, but some custom maps can conflict with certain vehicle mods. If you're getting crashes only on a specific map with specific vehicles, try testing them separately.
Prevention Tips
- Add mods in small batches. Don't dump 20 mods at once — add 3-4, test, then add more.
- Back up before adding mods. If something breaks, you can restore in seconds.
- Stick to well-rated mods. Mods with lots of downloads and good reviews are less likely to cause issues.
- Keep your mod count reasonable. More mods = more chances for conflicts. Quality over quantity.
